William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) was an American impressionist painter born in Williamsburg, Indiana. He was an extremely flexible artist working in multiple mediums with subject matter ranging in figures, landscapes, still-lifes, and portraiture. Among his many credits, William was also a print maker and successful instructor, teaching at both his own school Chase School of Art (now known as Parsons The New School for Design)and the prestigious Art Students League of New York.
